Pumpkin Spice Chocolate Chip Scones for the Autumn Season

I started making these scones 7 years ago for a Thanksgiving breakfast, because I didn’t like waiting until late afternoon to eat the holiday feast! It was a fun way to start the day of cooking, and my family delighted in taking the time to wake up to fresh coffee and scones, chat about the events of the day (parades, cooking, and watching a bird bake all day!), and relax.

These pumpkin spice chocolate chip scones are a perfect pairing with a warm cup of coffee. Crunchy on the edges, but a moist center!

INGREDIENTS

3 cups flour

1/2 cup sugar

1 Tablespoon baking powder

¾ teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon cinnamon

½ teaspoon ginger

¼ teaspoon nutmeg

1/4 teaspoon allspice

1 pinch cloves

1 cup canned pumpkin filling

2 eggs

¼ cup milk

½ cup butter, frozen

1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips

FOR THE GLAZE

1 pound powdered sugar

½ cup milk

½ teaspoon cinnamon

The glaze is key to have on these scones. It adds a great cinnamon flavor!

STEPS TO MAKE THESE YUMMY SCONES

  1. Combine ingredients: Combine dry ingredients with a wire whisk in a bowl. Whisk the pumpkin, eggs, and milk in a separate mixing bowl.
  2. Grate the butter: Grate the frozen butter in the large holes of a grater with wax paper underneath. Add grated butter to the flour mixture and toss gently. Toss in chocolate chips
  3. Form the dough: Fold in pumpkin mixture until a dough forms. Don’t overwork the dough. It is ok if a little of the flour still shows.  Divide the dough in half and place it on a flour-coated surface. Knead a couple of times if needed, and form each half into a 6-inch circle. Place the circles onto a prepared cookie sheet lined with parchment paper.
  4. Prepare to bake: Use a bench scraper to divide each circle into six triangles. Gently move the triangles out just a bit so each one has a little bit of space to bake.

Scones divided by 6 before going in the oven

This is how the scones should look prior to putting them in the oven. Remember to live a little bit of space between them so they have room to grow.

      5. Bake at 425° F: Bake in preheated oven for 22 minutes or until done.

      6. Cool: Let cool for 5-10 minutes on a wire rack.

      7. Make the glaze: Beat glaze ingredients together. Spoon over warm or room temperature scones.
